Contact a hotline in Australia to get advice on how to support someone you're worried about.

Many of us have struggled with our mental health at some point, or we know someone who has. When we suspect that a loved one could be having mental health problems, it can raise concerns. If your loved one shows any of these signs, contact a helplines in Australia for advice – 17 helplines are available:

  • They are easily startled.
  • They seem secretive, like they're hiding something.
  • They are struggling at school or work.
  • They reject invitations to spend time together or hang out.
  • They have told you they are struggling emotionally.
  • They always seems to be down or in a low mood.
  • They have started posting worrying content on social media.
  • They have become more withdrawn.

When someone you love opens up to you about difficult thoughts and feelings, not knowing how to respond is very normal. Yet it can make you feel helpless and cause you distress. Fortunately, there are lots of simple ways you can show your support.

You can get guidance on how best to support a loved one you're worried about by contacting a helpline in Australia. Helpline supporters can provide you with useful advice and resources so that you feel more empowered to help the person you care about.
