Abuse and domestic violence hotlines are available in Bangladesh

Many women, children, and men in the world are victims of domestic abuse– this is any behaviour that maintains control over a spouse, partner, family member, or girlfriend/boyfriend. Abuse may be expressed physically, emotionally, verbally, sexually, or financially, and you may feel threatened, controlled or coerced.

If you are being psychologically, emotionally or physically harmed, you are not alone. Statistics show that one in three women and one in three men have experienced abuse and domestic violence. If you're looking for support, there are 3 abuse and domestic violence hotlines in Bangladesh. Reach out if this is happening:

  • Not allowing you to work or get an education
  • Your partner/family member is constantly trying to convince you you’re crazy and makes you doubt your experiences (also known as gaslighting)
  • Any form of physical harm (hitting, slapping, strangling, kicking, burning, cutting)
  • Being exposed to intimidation and coercion
  • Avoiding certain topics so that you don’t anger your partner/family member
  • Your partner/family member is acting excessively jealously
  • Forcing you to use substances, lead an unhealthy lifestyle, or not take medication you need
  • Your devices are being monitored or tracked by a partner/family member

Experiencing a wide range of emotions is perfectly normal for victims of abuse and domestic violence. Doubting the clarity of your mind or your ability to understand what’s happening is also a common consequence of the abuse you have experienced.

You might feel insecure and unsure what the right thing to do in your situation is. Fortunately, there are professionals and volunteers in Bangladesh who have experience helping domestic violence and abuse victims. They could help you find your way towards a better life.

If you are ready to talk to someone about your experiences of abuse or domestic violence, you can contact a hotline in Bangladesh for free and confidential support.
