Are you or someone you know self-harming? Reach out for support from a helpline in Ontario, Canada

It can be hard to control the urge to intentionally harm yourself, especially if hurting yourself helps release intense negative emotions. However, it’s important to get help when you’re ready because self-harm carries risks. There are 23 hotlines in Ontario, Canada that can help. Reach out if you experience the following:

  • Feeling like you're addicted to pain or hurting yourself
  • Feeling the need to escape or numb your feelings
  • Not wanting to die, but still feeling like you need the pain
  • Taking part in high-risk activities, disregarding safety
  • Searching for ways to self-harm
  • Feeling like your emotions are too difficult or overwhelming to deal with
  • Feeling like your head is spinning with thoughts and there's no other option to make it stop
  • Feeling like you're worthless

It’s normal to look for ways to relieve strong, negative emotions. Although it’s not talked about much, self-harm is a common strategy people use to deal with emotional turmoil. It may not seem like it, but there are other, healthy ways to deal with the pain you're experiencing.

There are compassionate counselors and volunteers in Ontario, Canada who care about what you're going through. Helpline staff are properly trained to support people who self-harm You can talk openly to them and receive understanding, warmth and zero-judgement. They will meet you where you're at, whether you just need to be heard, or you're looking for advice.
