Is family life making you unhappy, anxious or afraid? Contact a hotline in Scotland for free, confidential support

Family problems can be difficult to cope with. Personality clashes and communication breakdowns hurt the most when they happen at home. Whether you’re struggling with family-based abuse, trauma, tension, addiction or even parents who demand perfection, you are not alone. Take the first step and contact one of 4 helplines in Scotland if you're experiencing the following:

  • Serious family issues such as divorce, addiction, loss of a family member, or sexual abuse.
  • Personality clashes, arguments and fights in your family.
  • A family member suffering from disability, illness or mental health problems.
  • Drug, alcohol or gambling addiction and the impact this can have on your family.
  • Frequent yelling, screaming, bickering or fights within the family.
  • Frequent conflicts about everyday things and differences of opinion, beliefs or behaviour.
  • Family members who ask too much of you or depend on you for support.
  • Abuse or neglect from your parent, guardian, sibling or spouse.

When you're experiencing family problems, you may tend to blame yourself. But you are not responsible for the behavior of your family members. While you can't control the poor behavior of others, you can get help with how to respond.

You may feel alone if you're experiencing family problems. You may think that nobody else has been through what you're going through and that nobody will relate. However, there are hotline volunteers and counselors in Scotland who care about the challenges you're facing and want to help you.
