Free helplines for loneliness are available in Ireland

Loneliness is something that everyone experiences from time to time. But when loneliness doesn't go away, it can start to have a serious impact on your mental and physical wellbeing. If you're struggling with these symptoms of chronic loneliness, reach out to one of 10 helplines in Ireland for support.

  • Feeling very sad and experiencing an overall low mood.
  • Wanting to connect with others but feeling held back by social anxiety.
  • Feeling that your physical and/or mental health is suffering.
  • Increased desire to binge-watch TV shows or movies.
  • Feeling extremely tired and even burnt out when you try to socialize.
  • Finding it hard to concentrate, focus, and make decisions.
  • Drinking or using substances to cope with negative feelings.
  • Feeling that nobody "gets" you.

Loneliness can be felt whether you spend a lot of time with others or alone. When you feel lonely, you may feel separate from others or like you don't belong. This can be very isolating and cause a lot of emotional pain.

You may be reluctant to ask for help, especially if it feels like nobody will relate to you and understand what you're going through. But getting help can relieve the emotional burden you're carrying and help you feel less isolated. There are compassionate helpline volunteers and counselors in Ireland that want to support you.

If you are ready to talk to someone about how lonely you feel, you can contact a hotline in Ireland for free and confidential support.
