Lost a loved one? Grief support hotlines are available in Belgium

The pain of grief and loss can make you want to withdraw from others and turn inwards. You may feel isolated. However, support is available. There are 5 hotlines in Belgium that support with grief and loss. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, you may find relief from talking to someone who understands:

  • If you are religious, you may start to question your faith
  • Having nightmares or disturbing dreams related to the loss
  • Increased anxiety about the future
  • Becoming tearful and crying more often and unexpectedly
  • Feeling more irritable than usual
  • Feeling like there's a pit in your stomach
  • Feeling emotionally unstable, like you're on an emotional rollercoaster
  • Body aches and pains and headaches

It's normal to feel many different emotions when you're grieving. If you've never experienced grief or loss before, this can be scary. It might feel like you're losing control. However, what you're feeling is a completelty normal response to a significant loss.

It's okay to allow yourself to feel and experience your emotions without any shame. Nobody has the right to tell you how to feel because each person's grieving process is unique. For people in Belgium, getting proper support can provide a space to talk about your experience openly and help you feel less isolated.
