Free helpline support for substance abuse, drugs and alcohol addiction is available in South Africa

Recovery from substance abuse and addiction is possible. It all starts with taking the first step to admit you have a problem with drugs or alcohol and seeking help. You can get support for yourself or a loved on by contacting one of 7 hotlines in South Africa if you notice these symptoms:

  • Spending money on drugs or alcohol despite it being unaffordable.
  • Experiencing interpersonal problems as a result of substance abuse.
  • Spending a lot of time recovering from drugs, alcohol, or other substances.
  • Obsessive thinking about using drugs or alcohol that makes it hard to focus on anything else.
  • Using more of drugs or alcohol than was originally intended.
  • Engaging in unsafe behavior as a result of substance use, e.g. having unprotected sex and sharing needles.
  • Inability to stop using drugs or alcohol despite repeated attempts.
  • Low mood including feelings of hopelessness, sadness or depression

It can be difficult to admit that you have a substance abuse problem and that you need help. It takes a lot of strength to take the first step, but when you do, you'll be that much closer to healing and recovery.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with substance-related problems, you can get confidential, zero-judgement support from a hotline in South Africa. Recovery advocates will meet you where you're at. Whether you need a listening ear, or you're ready to start treatment, you can get the support you need.
