Get help with abuse and domestic violence from a hotline in Puerto Rico

Many women, children, and men in the world are victims of domestic abuse– this is any behaviour that maintains control over a spouse, partner, family member, or girlfriend/boyfriend. Abuse may be expressed physically, emotionally, verbally, sexually, or financially, and you may feel threatened, controlled or coerced.

One in three women and one in three men have experienced abuse or domestic violence. You might be afraid of reaching out for support. However, there are people who are equipped and willing to help you. Consider reaching out to any of the 5 hotlines in Puerto Rico who with abuse and domestic violence if you are experiencing these signs:

  • Forcing you to use substances, lead an unhealthy lifestyle, or not take medication you need
  • Your belongings and property being destroyed
  • Feeling helpless, desperate, or emotionally numb
  • You are being isolated from friends and family members
  • Your partner/family member constantly checks up on you
  • Avoiding certain topics so that you don’t anger your partner/family member
  • Fear of your partner/family member much of the time
  • Your partner/family member belittles your accomplishments and makes you feel unworthy

Experiencing a wide range of emotions is perfectly normal for victims of abuse and domestic violence. Doubting the clarity of your mind or your ability to understand what’s happening is also a common consequence of the abuse you have experienced.

It’s normal if you feel isolated. Victims of abuse and domestic violence are exposed to extreme stress and often go through it alone. Even though it might feel difficult to share what you are going through, hotline staff in Puerto Rico will listen, try to understand – and help you.
