Battling to cope with your diagnosis and symptoms? Reach out to a helpline for free support in Northern Ireland

The reality of physical illness can be disruptive to your life, impacting how you do basic tasks and the way you see yourself. A serious diagnosis can leave you feeling helpless, defeated, isolated, burdensome and afraid. There are 3 helplines in Northern Ireland where you can confide in a volunteer or counselor. Consider contacting them if you feel:

  • Unable to cope mentally or emotionally with the pain and discomfort you feel.
  • Unsure how to process the reality of death or come to terms with your mortality.
  • That you are powerless, hopeless or burdensome.
  • Worried about how you’ll look after your family when you are sick, you lose your job, or become disabled.
  • Isolated from friends and family due to the physical and mental effects of your condition.
  • Depression about the life you've lost, things you cannot do, and places you cannot go.
  • Anxiety, tension, fear, sadness and helplessness about your condition and what the future holds.
  • Frustration and anger about the uncertainty and disabilities associated with your illness.

Physical illness can disrupt your sleep patterns, family life, social life, work life, and your ability to function as normal. Medication, pain and exhaustion can make it difficult to think straight or process your feelings. A bad diagnosis can feel devastating.

You have the potential to face the challenges of illness with resilience and grace – but you do need support. By reaching to a helpline in Northern Ireland, you can talk with counselor or volunteer who understands the unspoken, emotional effects of physical illness. Contacting a helpline doesn't mean you're weak – it simply shows that you are human.
