Abuse and domestic violence hotlines are available in British Columbia, Canada

Domestic abuse is the act of controlling or dominating a spouse, partner, boyfriend/girlfriend or family member. The abuse doesn't have to be physical – it may be emotional, sexual, verbal or financial in nature.

Setting free from an abuser may feel impossible. You are probably terrified and feel trapped. However, many victims of abuse and domestic violence have made it. With the help of 10 hotlines in British Columbia, Canada that support with abuse and domestic violence, you can live without having to endure these symptoms of abuse:

  • Fear of your partner/family member much of the time
  • Feeling like you can’t do anything right for your partner/family member
  • Being forced to have sex or perform other sexual activities that you don’t want to
  • You are being isolated from friends and family members
  • Your partner/family member is acting excessively jealously
  • Your partner/family member blames you for how they behave
  • Being exposed to intimidation and coercion
  • Any form of physical harm (hitting, slapping, strangling, kicking, burning, cutting)

Victims of abuse and domestic violence can be in a difficult position. They once had (or still have) love for the abuser. On the other hand, they are constantly exposed to harm from someone who should love them back. This can feel puzzling and scary.

There is no universal recipe for setting free from abuse and domestic violence. However, know that many women, children, and men in British Columbia, Canada have made it. The first step in the process is opening up to a trusted and understanding person. Then, you can find your way out.
