Are you experiencing abuse or domestic violence? Contact a hotline in New Zealand for support

Many women, children, and men in the world are victims of domestic abuse– this is any behaviour that maintains control over a spouse, partner, family member, or girlfriend/boyfriend. Abuse may be expressed physically, emotionally, verbally, sexually, or financially, and you may feel threatened, controlled or coerced.

If you are being psychologically, emotionally or physically harmed, you are not alone. Statistics show that one in three women and one in three men have experienced abuse and domestic violence. If you're looking for support, there are 15 abuse and domestic violence hotlines in New Zealand. Reach out if this is happening:

  • Avoiding certain topics so that you don’t anger your partner/family member
  • Your partner/family member has told you they will commit suicide if you leave
  • Your privacy online being invaded
  • Your belongings and property being destroyed
  • Not allowing you to work or get an education
  • Believing that your partner/family member’s aggressive behavior is your fault
  • Feeling helpless, desperate, or emotionally numb
  • Being taken advantage of financially

Experiencing a wide range of emotions is perfectly normal for victims of abuse and domestic violence. Doubting the clarity of your mind or your ability to understand what’s happening is also a common consequence of the abuse you have experienced.

Every story of abuse and domestic violence is unique. You are the one who will figure out what the best way out is for you as a person and in your circumstances. However, it is always easier to overcome such hardships with the right kind of support.

If you are ready to talk to someone about your experiences of abuse or domestic violence, you can contact a hotline in New Zealand for free and confidential support.
