Is your family too complicated to live with? Free helplines are available in Canada

Families can be complicated. If personality clashes, violence, substance use, illness, trauma or other problems at home are causing you fear, stress or pain, you are not alone. There are 8 hotlines in Canada for people struggling with family issues. If you are experiencing any of the following, reach out for a helping hand today:

  • Stress in the family, caused by issues with housing, money or unemployment.
  • Frequent conflicts about everyday things and differences of opinion, beliefs or behaviour.
  • Co-dependency, in which a family member relies on you for emotional, mental or physical support.
  • Money problems, unemployment, poverty and the many impacts these can have on your family.
  • Family conflicts with new step-parents, step-brothers, step-sisters or step-children.
  • Drug, alcohol or gambling addiction and the impact this can have on your family.
  • A parent or sibling who suffers from addiction, mental illness, illness or disability.
  • A sibling, parent or guardian who is absent physically or emotionally.

Experiencing problems at home is extremely challenging because it may feel like there is nowhere for you to escape to. When the people you live with are the source of your pain, home may no longer feel like a safe haven.

Family challenges can be hard to solve because there may be many people involved. It can be difficult to even know where to start. Reaching out to a compassionate hotline volunteer or counselor in Canada can be a positive first step. You may benefit from voicing your frustrations to someone who wants to listen, understand, and support you.
