Contact a hotline in Canada for help supporting a loved one with mental health problems.

Mental health problems affect about 13% of the global population. When it seems like a loved one is battling with their mental health, you might be struggling yourself to know how to support them. If you notice these signs in someone you care about, reach out for advice from one of 7 hotlines in Canada.

  • They have become highly self-critical.
  • They have started using substances like alcohol or drugs more often.
  • They have stopped caring about their physical appearance.
  • They are easily startled.
  • They complain about being about being tired all the time.
  • They are not keeping up with personal hygiene.
  • They've recently experienced a significant life event like a break up or a death.
  • You don’t hear from for days or weeks, when you used to hear from them often.

Most people find it difficult to know what to do or say when someone close to them appears to be struggling with their mental health. It's normal to feel a desire to help yet at the same time feel helpless. There are ways you can support your loved one that are not overly complicated.

If you feel alone in supporting a loved one through a crisis, then reaching out to a helpline volunteer in Canada could help. A helpline volunteer will offer you trusted advice on how to be there for the person you care about while looking after yourself at the same time.
