Struggling with family issues like fighting or jealousy? Contact a hotline in Australia for confidential help

Trouble at home can impact every part of your life, including school, work, relationships, and your mental and physical wellbeing. Families should support you, so when they become the problem, it really hurts. You’re not alone, there are 11 hotlines in Australia where you can get the support you need. Reach out if you're experiencing the following:

  • Perfectionism, pressure or abuse from your parent, guardian, sibling or spouse.
  • Struggles with generational, cultural or religious differences within the family.
  • Job loss, financial struggles or gambling and the impact these can have on your family.
  • Problems around separation and divorce, including jealousy, living with new family members and more.
  • Family members who depend on you for things they cannot do for themselves.
  • Family conflicts with new step-parents, step-brothers, step-sisters or step-children.
  • Family issues around domestic violence, sexual abuse, divorce, bereavement or trauma.
  • A parent, guardian, brother, sister or spouse who beats, bullies or tries to control you.

When you're experiencing family problems, you may tend to blame yourself. But you are not responsible for the behavior of your family members. While you can't control the poor behavior of others, you can get help with how to respond.

You may feel alone if you're experiencing family problems. You may think that nobody else has been through what you're going through and that nobody will relate. However, there are hotline volunteers and counselors in Australia who care about the challenges you're facing and want to help you.
