Everything changes when you’re diagnosed with a serious, chronic or life-threatening physical illness. Coping with your new reality can be challenging, especially when you feel isolated or alone. You are valued. There are 11 helplines in India where you can confide in volunteers or counselors for support when you feel:

  • Denial, reluctance or an inability to accept your diagnosis or medical condition.
  • Afraid about the uncertainty of life and the pain you may feel from your symptoms.
  • Shame and sadness about becoming a burden to others.
  • Frustration and anger about the uncertainty and disabilities associated with your illness.
  • Like a burden to friends or family, and no longer a valuable member of society.
  • Anxiety, tension, fear, sadness and helplessness about your condition and what the future holds.
  • That life isn’t worth living, given the limitations and pain associated with your medical condition.
  • Depression about the life you've lost, things you cannot do, and places you cannot go.

Hospital visits, pain and disability can take an overwhelming toll on your emotions. Medication and prolonged periods of stress can make it hard to function and think clearly from day to day. You may feel isolated, burdensome and unable to cope.

Facing the challenges of physical illness requires strength that can sometimes only come through support. There are volunteers and counselors in India who are waiting to hear your concerns and help you find the emotional strength and resilience within you. Asking for help doesn't mean you're weak – it shows that you are human.
