Mental health problems affect about 13% of the global population. When it seems like a loved one is battling with their mental health, you might be struggling yourself to know how to support them. If you notice these signs in someone you care about, reach out for advice from one of 48 hotlines in California, United States.

  • They always seems to be down or in a low mood.
  • They are easily startled.
  • They don’t seem to be keeping up with their daily responsibilities.
  • They have harmed themselves.
  • They seem irritable and their moods are unpredictable.
  • They have become more withdrawn.
  • They are struggling at school or work.
  • You don’t hear from for days or weeks, when you used to hear from them often.

When someone you love opens up to you about difficult thoughts and feelings, not knowing how to respond is very normal. Yet it can make you feel helpless and cause you distress. Fortunately, there are lots of simple ways you can show your support.

If you're worried about a loved one's mental health and you're not sure what to do, help is available. You can contact a hotline in California, United States and get support from a volunteer who cares. A helpline volunteer can guide you in how to help a loved one who is struggling.
