Traumatic experiences happen more often than you might think. Because they are so common and frequently highly distressing, Ontario, Canada has 26 helplines to help people dealing with trauma and PTSD. Symptoms might involve:

  • Being easily angered or upset
  • Continued negative thoughts about a traumatic experience
  • Overwhelming negative emotions such as guilt, shame, sadness and anxiety
  • Intrusive thoughts about the traumatic event
  • Feeling on edge and finding it difficult to relax
  • Experiencing 'hypervigilance' or extreme alertness
  • Physical sensations such as pain, trembling, sweating or nausea
  • Flashbacks of a traumatic event

The thoughts and feelings linked to trauma and PTSD are all completely normal. It’s okay to feel whatever you feel – and you can do so without guilt or shame.

Know that there are people in Ontario, Canada trained to help you deal with whatever sensations you are experiencing. They understand what you are going through, and you can find a safe place to talk without feeling judged.
